Issue Positions

For Presidential and Congressional candidates who refuse to provide voters with their positions, Vote Smart has researched their public records to determine their likely responses. These issue positions are from 2014.

  • "In addition, I am in favor of women's self-determination of their reproductive rights. I believe abortions should always be safe, legal and rare and free from invasive procedures. To accomplish this we should continue to have funding for family planning programs. In Congress, I will be a steadfast supporter of this non-negotiable right, including support for women who receive funding from federal health coverage, an option my opponent voted to ban." (votesmart.org)
  • "Corporate taxation contributes less than 10% of all taxes collected. How can that be? We all know that the US has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world at 35%!...My plan will focus on corporate taxation." (votesmart.org)
  • "To return to the Clinton era, one defined by four years of budget surpluses, we need elected officials who are fiscally responsible. We need Democrats." (votesmart.org)

  • "In order to ensure America's long-term prosperity and national security, it is vital that we pursue a long overdue strategy for energy independence. As a Congressman, I will aggressively promote investment in green and renewable energy, including solar, wind, geothermal, and nuclear power. [...] Energy independence and sustainable development can go hand in hand. [...]One of the most important factors in this conversation will be garnering support for technological innovation in the alternative energy sector. We need to make sure that the Unites States remains at the cutting edge of developing technologies, and does not fall behind the other industrial economies which are willing to explore there. The only way to promote "green innovation" is through investment in the development of green jobs at home." (votesmart.org)
  • "We really need to explore, and commit to, public-private partnerships in a greener economy." (votesmart.org)
  • "Like most New Jerseyans and Americans, I believe in the Second Amendment right to own and bear firearms. I also support the Castle Law, a law which allows the citizens of our state to defend themselves and their families if they are attacked or threatened within their own home. The Castle Law is the rational alternative to Stand Your Ground. It does not permit me to pick a fight in the street, a fight that I can escalate and later use to justify deadly force. The Castle Law is far more specific than that. It allows me to secure my home, simply and plainly. I'm glad that these laws exist. At the same time, I cannot ignore the fact that 30,000 Americans were killed last year by gun violence, with another 55,000 injured seriously. Rights must be protected, and security measures must be pursued, but we can find easy and practical ways to minimize the harm done by gun violence every day in our streets. The most obvious and sensible way is by limiting the number of guns that find their way into the hands of criminals. Currently, the government has no effective way to do so. That's why I personally support rigorous background checks for everyone buying a gun, which is NOT the current law. It should not be easier to buy and operate a gun than it is to get a license and vehicular registration with the DMV. Background checks will help keep guns out of the hands of felons and the mentally challenged. To be effective, they must close loopholes for private and gun show sales, as well. These loopholes result in the purchase of over 6 million guns a year with no background checks. This is unacceptable and must change." (votesmart.org)
  • "I believe we need to closely evaluate and where necessary adjust The Affordable Care Act. Philosophically I believe that affordable healthcare should be a right, not a privilege. The Affordable Healthcare Act is law and the Supreme Court ruled in its favor. We need to give it a chance. That said, any legislation of this magnitude is bound to contain flaws and indeed this Act does. I plan to work with my fellow Representatives in Congress to identify, address and correct those flaws in order to strengthen the program." (votesmart.org)
  • "Immigration reform will not solve all our fiscal problems but will help increase the ratio between workers and retirees." (votesmart.org)
  • "In recent years, the President of the United States has taken significant action to promote equal rights and treatment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning Americans. More recently, I was very happy to see an end to the Defense of Marriage Act. On a personal level, I am against all forms of discrimination. We can't discriminate on such basic, everyday matters, and still call ourselves a nation of equals. As your representative, I will support every effort to establish and guarantee equal rights for committed couples." (votesmart.org)
